MUST DO Day trip from Kampot | Kep Crab Market

Today is our first full day in Kampot, Cambodia and we will be heading nearby to the Kep Crab Market! We got here yesterday on a mini bus from Phnom Penh. It turned out to be quite the adventure... what was supposed to be around a 3 hour ride turned into over 6 hours. The road condition was quite rough and the bus was supposed to have AC (it didn't...) But we made it safe and we are excited to be in the small, laidback riverside town of Kampot. We rent a scooter and head about 30 minutes east to the fishing village of Kep. Kep is known for their seafood and we go to the local market where they are selling fresh seafood and crabs right out of the water. We enjoy watching all of the action but it’s still a little early so we head to the beach, buy a couple coconuts and hang out on the sand until lunch time. Once it is time for lunch, we head back to the market to see if we can buy some crab! After some searching and some back and forth with the ladies selling the crab, we buy a half kilo. We then walk down the boardwalk to an area where several stalls are preparing fresh seafood and they prepare our crab for us right there on the pier! They clean, prep and cook the crab in a matter of minutes and it looks SO GOOD! There are whole Kampot peppercorns and an amazing spicy sauce! After lunch, we head to La Plantation, one of the many pepper plantations in this area. Kampot is famous for its peppercorn and after eating that delicious pepper crab for lunch, we are excited to learn more. La Plantation actually offers free tours around their farm so we make our way around the property and learn about the process of growing peppercorn and the difference between black pepper, white pepper and red pepper. it is an interesting tour around the plantation and we finish up with a pepper tasting. The tasting is very extensive and we are surprised to learn just how many types of peppercorn there are. It is getting late in the day so we head back towards Kampot and go to Fish Island to watch an amazing sunset over the salt fields.
