This is a flyback oscillator which allows a 1.5v LED to be lit by a dying / dead 1.5 volt battery. Most use a toroid coil which is bigger and likely will waste more power than the SMD inductors. Why build a "no coil" Joule Thief: Fewer parts, small size., no coil to wind. Most of these parts can be found in broken routers, radios, etc. Most of the toroid devices oscillate at a frequency of around 12kHz to 25kHz, but this type resonates around 800kHz to 1.2MHz CONSTRUCTION NOTES Coils are labeled L or FB (ferrite bead) If you can't tell the difference between a surface mount inductor and capacitor you should be able to use a volt meter set on resistance (ohms). An inductor should show a steady reading. A capacitor should show a brief reading then settle down to near zero. This is version 2.0 and unfortunately has a more limited voltage range (0.4v to 0.7v) than version 1.0 (0.3v to 1.2v), the difference between the two being the SMD inductors used. MATERIALS Transistor (2n2222 or equivalent hfe of 35 or better) 2x surface mount inductors (4 x 1.5 x 1 mm approx) LED (good efficiency) If you can't tell the difference between a surface mount inductor and capacitor you should be able to use a volt meter set on resistance (ohms). An inductor should show a steady reading. A capacitor should show a brief reading then settle down to near zero. However detecting the difference between an SMD resistor and inductor is very difficult, so it's best to ensure you separate them from the time you remove them from the circuit board.
