Statement on Russian Military Invasion of Ukraine March 11, 2022 The World Shorinji Kempo Organization (WSKO) does not tolerate the unilateral violence of the Russian government. We do not accept any reasoning behind launching the military invasion across the Ukrainian border on February 25th Japan time, or for the continuing attacks still taking the lives of Ukrainian citizens. We pray for the souls of all those who have died as a result of this act. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to all those still suffering - people forced to flee their homes at daily threats to their lives. However, there are many WSKO branch masters and kenshi practicing in Russia, and many of them have family and friends in Ukraine. This military attack has nothing to do with Shorinji Kempo members in Russia. I feel as if my heart is being torn apart when I think of the situation that the condemnation and prejudice that the world is now directing at Russia are also directed at our Russian members in the same way, and they suffer from the blocking of information and communication both domestically and internationally, and the pressure on their lives due to economic sanctions. We are in constant contact with the Ukrainian Shorinji Kempo Federation and we check on the safety of our branch masters and Kenshi there, while collecting information about Ukraine and neighboring countries. We hope they remain safe and find courage. Our local members share that it’s difficult to receive supplies or funds from abroad due to restrictions on all activities, including in most regions curfew, logistical or financial restraints. It is clear from ongoing news reports that people are suffering at this very moment. They need food, medical care and various utilities. We must also abandon 20th century mindsets that accept that nations may sacrifice civilian’s welfare and force them into conflict at the cost of their lives. Let us recall the words of our founder of Shorinji Kempo, So Doshin: "There is no such thing as a war for justice. There is nothing that can be solved by force. Only hatred remains. War is to lose what we love.” Let each of us think, seek and act at the national federation level, the branch level, or the individual level. In this spirit, one example I suggest is to contribute to relief funds by donating cash to support the citizens of Ukraine. Contributing via local organizations is also an effective way to act. If you need advice or support feel welcome to directly act with WSKO by contributing via our organization. Please understand that we will continue to monitor the situation to understand what WSKO can do to support local Shorinji Kempo members. We may contact you again with a request for your cooperation.
