In this lesson, Chad provides an introduction to sound waves. He provides a description of these longitudinal waves with alternating regions of compression and rarefaction. The speed of sound in different mediums is then discussed at length. Generally, the speed of sound is fastest in solids, then liquids, and then gases. Equations are provided for the speed of sound in a metal rod, in fluids, in gases, and in air as a function of temperature. The speed of sound in a metal rod is dependent upon Young's modulus and the density of the solid. The speed of sound in a fluid is dependent upon the Bulk modulus and the density of the fluid. The speed of sound in a gas is dependent upon the pressure and the density of the gas. Finally, the equation showing the effect of temperature on the speed of sound in air is presented. 00:00 Lesson Introduction 00:39 Sound Waves: Compression and Rarefaction 02:46 Wavelength, Frequency, and Speed of Sound 03:46 Speed of Sound Equations in Solids, Liquids, and Gases 05:51 Speed of Sound in Air 07:45 Speed of Sound Example Problems Check out Chad's General Physics Master Course: https://www.chadsprep.com/physics-you... #generalphysics #physicstutorial
