2021 | 43rd Annual Meeting | Poster | The JNSPG Experience in Launching New Programs for Little to No Budget Lessons learned and tips for launching new programs with little or no budget by leveraging staff knowledge and curiosity, volunteer contributions from society members, and readily available in-house hardware/software. In this pandemic year, Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group (JNSPG) has launched or expanded projects with little or no budgetary impact, with clear goals and projections for development. • JNSPG Journal Club – Monthly topic-based online webinars discussing an article from Neurosurgical Focusor Neurosurgical Focus: Video (https://thejns.org/page/journal_club). Our editor-as-moderator, author-as-panelist, readers-as-audience model lends itself to existing online meeting platforms. No budget. • Social Media – Six volunteer medical students and residents curate and manage the JNSPG social media platform, with oversight from JNSPG staff. Having published 2 peer-reviewed articles about social media’s impact on our user metrics, the team is currently gathering data for a paper comparing presence vs absence of visual abstracts on usage metrics. No budget. • JNS: Case Lessons — As a self-published, nonprofit journal group, we have wrestled with high-quality, impactful content that is important to our readership but doesn’t fit in our flagship journals. By piggy-backing on our current journal systems and working with our vendor partners, we created an OA journal product that is sustainable, scalable, and is priced significantly below industry standard. Low startup costs and no addition to in-house staff. • Young Neurosurgeons Committee peer review mentoring — Peer-selected members from our parent association’s committee serve as peer reviewers on select articles, with direct feedback and mentoring from our EIC and EB members. No budget. Is implicit bias impacting your user's experience? Presenter: Gillian Shasby
