BIG SNOW AND BITTER COLD: How much to expect and when

A major winter storm is in play for Sunday. The entire region is under a Winter Storm Warning. It will be cloudy, dry, and very cold this afternoon with highs only in the middle to upper teens. Snow will overspread the region tonight, mainly after 10pm and continue into Sunday. The snow will be very heavy as we move through the morning and afternoon tomorrow. This will be a high impact event with snowfall rates of 2 inches per hour and that means 12-16" for much of the region. There is a high chance that some sleet mixes in with the snow, especially south of the Turnpike. It is unclear how far the snow/sleet line will lift to the north but regardless, expect many roads to become treacherous and even impassable. Avoid any unnecessary travel on Sunday. Temperatures during the storm will be unusually cold with much of Sunday in the teens. Temperatures will warm into the 20s Sunday evening. The winter storm will wrap up tomorrow evening with much of the action to our east by midnight. The impacts from this storm will linger into Monday with extremely cold conditions. Highs will be in the middle 20s with gusty winds that will create blowing and drifting of the snow. Temperatures tumble Monday night into the single digits with below zero wind chills.
