Many professors aren't sure if a Licenses and Certifications section makes sense for their LinkedIn profile. This video was recorded in 2021 and is now on YouTube to be accessible to more academics around the world. I hope you find it helpful. You probably do more professional development training than you think. While not all the training you do will result in a certificate, this space is perfect for highlighting it. If you completed a Certificate Program (an in-depth certification at your university or through a scholarly society), that goes best in the Education section. It will be more prominent on your profile then. But what about other trainings and certifications you've done? On my CV, I keep a list of 'Related Professional Training.' On it are things like -Social Media Pro Certification, Social Media Pro -Managing an International Social Media Presence CEU, National Institute for Social Media -Advanced Google Analytics, Google -Course Design, Online Learning Consortium (OLC) -ULearn Online Teacher Certification, University of Louisiana at Lafayette -Teaching College English Composition Practicum, University of Louisiana at Lafayette -Creative Writing Pedagogy, Naropa University -Level 1 Tutor Certification, College Reading and Learning Association Some of these trainings are clearly right for the Licenses and Certifications section. They're traditional certifications recognized by people in related industries. -Social Media Pro Certification, Social Media Pro -Managing an International Social Media Presence CEU, National Institute for Social Media -Advanced Google Analytics, Google The rest may be confusing for someone outside of education, but are great examples of what you can add to your Licenses and Certifications as a professor or researcher. -Course Design Track, Online Learning Consortium (OLC) -ULearn Online Teacher Certification, University of Louisiana at Lafayette -Teaching College English Composition Practicum, University of Louisiana at Lafayette -Creative Writing Pedagogy, Naropa University -Level 1 Tutor Certification, College Reading and Learning Association The Licenses and Certifications section is how you communicate with others in your field. With the people visiting your profile who may need a better understanding of your skills and expertise. You're all experts in at least 1 area of research/teaching. You also may have skills and expertise in things like -teaching -program management -center or institute management -evaluation -administration -etc. Use your Licenses and Certifications section to share the professional development training you've completed. Here's the information you can add to each entry: -Name (i.e. Creative Writing Pedagogy)* -Issuing Organization (i.e. Naropa University)* -Checkbox: Does this credential expire? -Issue date -Expiration date (only if you check the box) -Credential ID Don't do Skills Assessment Tests on LinkedIn LinkedIn will ask you if you want to complete a LinkedIn Skill Assessment Test so you can include that you passed on your profile. Don't use this. The tests are hard. Many employers don't look for them. And if they are looking for proof that you are able to do something, they'll either -trust you -ask for a portfolio -look for a License or Certification -give you their own test So just ignore the LinkedIn Skills Assessment Tests unless you've been directed by a potential employer to take it.
