Every crafter has a bunch of various tools in their arsenal. All of this is to make the sewing process as convenient as possible and enjoyable. These include scissors, rulers, presser feet, pins, tweezers, chalk, a plate for passing through thick seams, cutting mats, disappearing markers, and much more. This is far from a complete list. With each passing moment, this list grows. Sometimes you have to practice to understand how to use a particular accessory. In the past, I used soap scraps for cutting until I tried the special Panda chalk. It's like night and day. Or high-quality sharp scissors that don’t dull, which seem to cut even before touching the fabric, are incomparable to ordinary ones. A seam ripper is one of the indispensable tools in sewing. This tool is needed to rip machine stitches. It consists of two tips. All my life, I used the long sharp tip, getting used to it as it should be, even though I damaged the fabric several times with careless movements. I thought the short one with the red ball was for avoiding injury. However, a slight degree of uncertainty about that always remained. Both tips have sharp blades. But in reality, it’s the short blade with the red ball that rips the seam. The ball protects the fabric from cuts. After all the sewing I’ve done, this is quite a revelation! How to properly use a seam ripper: At the beginning of the stitch, from the wrong side, lift the thread with the long end and cut it, then use your hands to spread the seam. Turn the fabric to the right side. Position the seam ripper so that the blade with the red dot is underneath the stitch between the two layers of fabric. The long tip should be outside on top of the fabric. Once the seam is spread, move the seam ripper forward. It will glide along the seam like butter. Another revelation: the ripped threads gather in a little bundle on the small blade. The myth that the side with the ball is to avoid pricking your finger has been dispelled once and for all. As they say, you live and learn.
