www.EyeOC.com / doctorkrad Within a healthy eye is a clear lens. As we become older, that lens becomes cloudy. The cloudy lens is called a Cataract. In cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens implant. There are many types of lens implants that have various optical and material properties. Silicone IOL's provide excellent visual quality, and they don't tend to shimmer in the pupil as much as acrylic IOL's. However silicone IOL's are more pro-inflammatory than hydrophobic acrylic lenses, and pigmented membranes can form on the surface of the IOL. If the membrane is opaque, it will degrade vision quality. This situation would require Yag Laser treatment to improve vision quality.
