After a previous surgeon said her necessary surgery had to be delayed four to six months because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. LaNail Plummer took control of her health and sought a second opinion from the Center for Innovative GYN Care (CIGC). In this Facebook Live recording LaNail is joined by CIGC Director of Education and Community Outreach, Nilofar Kazi as she tells her story. Dr. Plummer discusses her life living with uterine fibroids and how she ultimately decided to have a minimally invasive, DualPortGYN hysterectomy with CIGC. Find Relief from Fibroids - https://innovativegyn.com/conditions/... Hysterectomy Specialists - https://innovativegyn.com/procedures/... Dr. LaNail Plummer is the CEO of Onyx Therapy Group and a faculty member at Johns Hopkins University. She owns and operates 8 clinical offices in Washington DC, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Dr. Plummer was told at an early age that fibroids were prevalent among women in her family and she saw her mother undergo a hysterectomy at the age of 28 because of the condition. Dr. Plummer knew that her fibroids would most likely cause fertility issues so she planned to have her children early. She had her first child at 24 and her second child at 26. In 2016, Dr. Plummer had a focused ultrasound performed to diagnose her fibroids and initially used alternative medicine to cope with her pelvic and lower back pain. In 2019, the back pain from her fibroids intensified and she noticed that her fibroids had grown, in fact the fibroids in her stomach had begun to visibly protrude and become sensitive to touch. It was then she decided she needed to see a surgeon. Can Large Fibroids Be Removed Laparoscopically? - https://innovativegyn.com/blog/can-la... Dr. Plummer scheduled a consultation with an initial gynecological surgeon close her home. She underwent a second sonogram and doctors confirmed that her fibroids had grown significantly. By this time, COVID-19 began to affect treatment options as hospitals began to limit elective surgeries. After her diagnostic appointment, she followed up with her surgeon in a telehealth visit. She was informed that her fibroid had “grown to the size of a normal uterus,” and that “her uterus has doubled in size.” She was also informed that precancerous cells were found on her cervix. The surgeon recommended a full hysterectomy via open abdominal procedure. **An open abdominal hysterectomy is a heavily invasive surgery requiring an extended hospital stay and 2 months of recovery time. Hospitals are areas of increased exposure during COVID-19 because they see emergent patients of all conditions. In addition to the long recovery, the complication rates for open hysterectomy surgery are much higher than laparoscopic methods. As a mental health professional, Dr. Plummer states her doctors were highly unethical in their delivery of her diagnosis and treatment options. She was told traumatic news in a cold and robotic manner. She was not given a chance to prepare any support system and her doctor lacked empathy and tact. Dr. Plummer could not justify a heavily invasive, open surgical procedure which would also require 2-3 months to recover. She knew there had to be other options to remove her fibroids via hysterectomy, so she sought a second opinion from CIGC. She met with Dr. Natalya Danilyants, co-founder of the Center for Innovative GYN Care and discussed her history with fibroids and treatment options. She was informed that she was a candidate for CIGC’s advanced laparoscopic surgical technique called DualPortGYN. The DualPortGYN Technique - https://innovativegyn.com/techniques/... DualPortGYN is a groundbreaking surgical technique that uses two incisions to treat endometriosis, fibroids, or adenomyosis. Standard laparoscopic or robotic surgery uses between four to six incisions. DualPortGYN is a safer approach to hysterectomy because CIGC specialists are able to see behind the peritoneum or the membrane of the abdominal cavity, to fully visualize the anatomy. The DualPortGYN approach also allows uterine artery ligation where CIGC surgeons are able to temporarily tie off the blood supply to the uterine artery to minimize blood loss. Minimized blood loss allows surgeons to see more clearly during surgery and increase the safety of the procedure. Dr. Plummer returned home 1.5 hours after her procedure and was back to work in a week. She was able to treat her fibroids through a minimally invasive hysterectomy, DualPortGYN. A month after her surgery, Dr. Plummer has returned to her active lifestyle of rigorous exercise, running, raising her children and working full-time. Ready to take control of your health?
