Introducing Omar Itani, our trailblazing alumnus! Hear about what inspired him to launch an innovative social enterprise that promotes recycling, upcycling, sustainability AND that gives back to those in need. #AlumniVoices 🧵♻️ #socialenterprise #recycling #upcycling #sustainability In this edition of U.S. Embassy Beirut's Alumni Voices interview series, Omar Itani, General Manager of FabricAID, shares the inspiring journey of how he started the social enterprise after participating in the Student Leaders Program in the U.S. in 2016. Through his travels and studies at Benedictine University, he gained valuable insights into international affairs, political science, volunteering, and community service. FabricAID focuses on collecting used clothing and distributing it to low-income communities through their stores. They offer a dignified shopping experience with items priced affordably for marginalized communities. Additionally, any unsold items are upcycled or recycled into new fashion lines. Thanks to FabricAID, more than one million items have been sold to 200,000 marginalized individuals, and 600,000 kg of clothing have been recycled. This has resulted in environmental, social, and financial benefits, creating 100 jobs and investing around $5 million USD in Lebanon. Omar's journey with FabricAID highlights the significant impact social entrepreneurship can have on communities and emphasizes the continuous support from the alumni network.
