Not running through SEGA PC Reloaded, nor a virtualized Windows 98 machine (i.e. VirtualBox, VMware, etc.), but rather an EMULATED Windows 98 machine, via PCem. One may ask how many times I've beaten Sonic CD in my lifetime, and my answer to that would be "Yes". I've beaten the original Mega-CD version, the Plus Plus rom hack, the 2011 remaster, both standalone and Origins versions of it, the Gems Collection version (which is just a fork of this 1996 PC port but with borked water effects) and then this 1996 port. I've already played this (now obsolete) port quite a number of times via SEGA PC Reloaded on modern Windows, but it's missing the fading effects and the loading screen. I remember being curious enough to play this version mainly for how differently Sonic is drawn on the title screen compared to the Mega CD original and the 2011 remaster. So here in this video, I wanna play this port on the OS's it was meant for: Windows 95 and 98, which for this video's case, I used 98. Not running through virtualization like VMWare and Virtualbox, but through emulation via PCem. This port made a few sacrifices to run on late 90's PCs at the time, like a few missing effects and lower quality SFX. This port would later on serve as the base for the game's inclusion Sonic Gems Collection, which suffered in more missing effects than the original PC port did. This port is notable for marking the first time the original animated FMVs were shown to its (mostly) full glory, especially with the opening, which restores scenes missing from the Mega-CD original, albeit still compressed to 256 colors and 15 FPS framerate. This port also has an option to switch framerates, by default it's set to "Fast Sonic", which sets the game to 30 FPS max. Switching to "Smooth Sonic allows the game to target 60 FPS, but depending on how powerful your Windows 9x machine was (or "is" if you happen to still have one working fine), may get you random minor slowdowns. On modern Windows via SEGA PC Reloaded, you'd be definitely having Smooth Sonic on at all times. By default, only the US Soundtrack exists in ALL releases of this PC port, even the Japanese release, for whatever reason. This video basically answers the question: "What if it wasn't that way?". I made an edit of the original disc image file of the 1996 PC port to not only replace the US OST with the JP OST but even took the extra mile to modify the original video files for the Opening & Part 1s of the endings, not just changing the music for them, but even replacing the US version credits with the JP one, and re-encoded them to Cinepak to ensure they play in-game on both Windows 9x and Modern Windows (via SEGA PC Reloaded)! I even went as far as editing the WinHelp file to change the Sonic Boom: The Song lyrics section into the JP theme, You Can Do Anything, for a bit more authenticity. However, replacing the Soundtrack did show off that this port isn't optimized with the JP OST. Since it's still based on the US version, the Stage Clear screen still goes on for a bit longer as if the US version of the track is playing, as the US version of the Stage Clear theme is longer than the JP theme. If you get a good future in Stardust Speedway Zone 3, it always plays the Good Future track even on the race against Metal Sonic, rather than changing to the Bad Future track.
