Sternazip:An Innovative Surgical Device for Delayed Sternal Closure Utilizing Nano-silver Technology

Since 1957, a median sternotomy is the primary surgical approach in cardiac surgery to enable optimal exposure and access to the chest cavity. In certain conditions in which patients cannot undergo sternal closure after cardiac surgery, a Delayed Chest Closure (DSC) can be life-saving. The standard of practice worldwide is creating an oval patch from a sterile latex surgical glove to cover the heart and protect the cardiac structures from the external environment. However, this method has numerous limitations including increased risks of sternal wound infection, necessitating daily change of the glove patch to ensure sterility. As such, we would like to introduce SternaZipTM, an innovative sternal closure device fabricated from medical grade silicone integrated with nanosilver technology and designed with an interlocking zip system. The nanosilver antimicrobial properties and air-tight seal will reduce the rate of sternal wound infection and negate the need for repeated change, whilst the interlocking zip system enables rapid surgical access without the need for repeated patch removal. In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in promoting innovations and good health, this novel device will improve sternal wound care management in the short term and increase overall productivity in the long term. This endeavour is a collaboration between the Faculties of Medicine and Applied Sciences, UiTM, and Razak Faculty of Technology and Informatics, UTM. With its novelty, inventive steps and industrial application, this innovative device has been successfully filed for patent and has been recognized by the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery. Associate Professor Dr Muhammad ‘Abid Amir is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon and is currently practicing in Hospital UiTM, Sungai Buloh, Selangor. He holds a Masters in Surgery from Universiti Malaya, is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is pursuing a Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Monash Heart Centre, Melbourne, Australia. He is actively involved in medical education and postgraduate training and is the Coordinator of the UiTM-National Heart Institute Masters in Surgical Sciences (Cardiothoracic Surgery) Postgraduate Training Program. His focus of clinical practice is in adult cardiac and thoracic surgery with avid interests in interdisciplinary research and surgical innovations and inventions. He has presented at numerous national and international meetings including as Keynote Speaker at the MIP 2019 Conference, University of Cambridge. His publications encompass the field of cardiothoracic surgery, interdisciplinary research including translational music-medicine practice as well as surgical innovations and inventions. Recent international awards for innovation include prize awards at the prestigious 35th European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery Techno-College Innovation Awards, the 21st Malaysian Association for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Young Investigator Awards,  Invention, Innovation and Design Exposition (IIDEX) 2021, and at the Virtual International Medical Innovation Competition (IMIC) 2021.
