Hundreds of generational farmers are facing eviction in Malaysia, after the lands they were farming on were sold or alienated to private companies, including and state government-linked companies. Most of these farmers' families have been producing food for Malaysians since colonial times, but they were never given the chance to secure land titles, and so they now face eviction as "illegal squatters". The evictions are happening even as experts warn of an impending food security crisis with heatwaves and flooding becoming increasingly extreme. Cost of living is also steadily increasing, with the value of Malaysia's food imports growing every year since 2013. But the farmers are not leaving without a fight. THE LAST HARVEST follows their story and that of the activists working with them to defend Malaysia's food security by demanding fair rights and solutions for the farmers. One of their chief demands is for the Federal Government to use eminent domain laws to acquire the land from the private companies, and lease it back to the farmers to recoup the cost. With hundreds of farms facing irreversible damage once the farmers are evicted, they are racing against time to lobby Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his government to take action. But will they listen? THE LAST HARVEST was produced by @TheFourth in collaboration with Undi 18, with support from the Bertha Foundation.
