Welcome to Puerto Natales, Chile! This town is the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park, and it’s a must-stop on any southern Patagonian itinerary. Most visitors to Puerto Natales are avid multi-day trekkers looking to tackle the W Trek or the O Circuit. But even day hikers can enjoy seeing the turquoise lakes and the jagged granite peaks known as the Horns of Paine. In this video, we’re going to share what you can expect to see on an action-packed day at Torres del Paine National Park. We’re talking lakes, waterfalls, and a beach where you can spot icebergs! Plus, we’ll highlight some sights along Puerto Natales’ waterfront, nearby attractions like the milodon cave, places to eat, where to stay, and practical info like how to get there. So if you’re planning a trip to this corner of Chilean Patagonia, stick around! 🇨🇱 PUERTO NATALES TRAVEL GUIDE 🇨🇱 00:54 - Getting to Puerto Natales 01:30 - Torres del Paine National Park 04:48 - Mylodon Cave Natural Monument 06:49 - Puerto Natales Waterfront 07:54 - KAU Cafe and Lounge 08:09 - Ñandú 09:04 - Angelica's Restaurant 09:40 - Vinnhaus 10:08 - Where to Stay in Puerto Natales THINGS TO DO IN PUERTO NATALES, CHILE Getting to Puerto Natales Puerto Natales has a very small airport, Teniente Julio Gallardo Airport (airport code PNT), that receives flights from Santiago de Chile and Puerto Montt. Alternatively, there are bus connections to Puerto Natales via Punta Arenas on the Chilean side and El Calafate on the Argentine side with travellers with multiple connections per day. Torres del Paine National Park First and foremost, Puerto Natales is the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park! If you’re a hardcore trekker, then you probably have two circuits on your brain: the W Trek, which can be done in 3-5 days, or the more challenging O Circuit, which takes 7-9 days. We felt like we had walked our legs off in neighbouring El Chalten, Argentina, so we skipped the overnight treks and opted for a day visit. Milodon Cave The Milodón Cave is a natural monument and a massive cave system where the remains of a milodón were found. This is a prehistoric ground sloth that once lived in this region. It was a plant-eating, toothless mammal, that moved on 4 legs, and weighed approximately one ton. It had powerful claws and a thick coat of fur that allowed it to withstand the low temperatures of the time. Puerto Natales Waterfront Puerto Natales’ waterfront is lined with lots of sculptures and monuments that are worth visiting. A few of the highlights included the Puerto Natales town sign with the milodon. Then you have La Mano or The Hand, an art installation where 5 giant-sized fingers stick out of the ground. The old pier is another iconic landmark and a popular spot for photos. Lastly, we visited the Monument to the Wind, a sculpture of a man and a woman, blowing in the wind. Kau Cafe Kau Cafe and Lounge is located in the same building as the Kau Lodge. This is a great brunch stop. We loved their coffees, baked goods and sandwiches. And it’s a really nice location overlooking the water. Ñandu One restaurant in Puerto Natales that we hit up a couple of times is Ñandu. They had a lot of traditional Chilean dishes on the menu, so that’s what drew us in. We tried the salmon ceviche and the pastel the choclo. Angelica’s Because we were visiting Puerto Natales during the holiday season, we treated ourselves to a few fancy meals. I had the grilled salmon with a butter sauce, and a cous cous with black olives and goat cheese. Meanwhile, Sam opted for the homemade gnocchi with a four-cheese sauce. And for dessert, tiramisu! Vinnhaus Vinnhaus was another stellar meal. We opted for their set dinner menu. Pisco sour for our aperitivo. Homemade bruschetta with pesto and tomatoes for the appetizer. Salmon ceviche with mango for the starter. The main dish was Patagonian guanaco medallions with red cabbage and a potato dumpling. Lastly, dessert was coffee panna cotta. Where to Stay in Puerto Natales As far as accommodations go, we booked an apartment that was a little way from the downtown core! I would try to choose something close to the waterfront or near Plaza de Armas Arturo Prat. If you want to stay in Torres del Paine National Park, look at EcoCamp Patagonia (the world’s first geodesic dome hotel), or Explora Torres del Paine, which offers 5-star luxury in the park.
