When I first started teaching Introduction to Public Speaking and Human Communication, I had a major problem. Students skipped class. Group presentations were disjointed. The energy in the room was low. At first I thought the problem was the students. Then I realized the real issue. In the textbook we were using, communicating in groups and teams was Chapter 10. Which meant I was teaching students how to collaborate… ten chapters after they already needed to collaborate. So I flipped the course. I moved the conversation about teamwork and culture to the beginning of the semester and everything changed. The experience taught me an important leadership lesson: Culture should never be Chapter 10. In organizations, leaders often start with projects, deadlines, and strategy — and only talk about culture when something goes wrong. But the best leaders start somewhere else.
