West Bengal violence: Widespread violence marred the polling process in West Bengal Panchayat elections today. At least seven people, three from the ruling Trinamool Congress and one from the BJP, were allegedly killed in clashes during voting. Polling booths were vandalised, and ballot papers were set on fire in Cooch Behar. West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, who visited North 24 Parganas on the morning of July 8, said, "Elections must be through ballots, not bullets." Meanwhile, West Bengal's Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, equated the ongoing election in the state with death.
