In Elvis' final years, Sherrill became an integral part of his music both on stage and in the recording studio. Sherrill sing harmony with the King on "Blue Spanish Eyes" as well as "Help Me", and it's Sherrill who sings the high falsetto ending on "Unchained Melody." But Sherrill will probably be remembered most for singing "O Solo Mio" as an intro to "It's Now Or Never" during Elvis concerts in 1976 and 1977, and for the Grammy nominated "Softly, As I Leave You" where Sherrill sings and Elvis recites the words. Sherrill was truly a magnificant tenor whose incomparable career placed him with several of the most influential vocal groups of all time, such as The Masters V, Hovie Lister & the Statesmen, The Speer Family, The Songfellows, the original Imperials and The Plainsmen. He received a Living Legend Award and was inducted into several Hall of Fames. Harrison Tyner wrote: "Producing and managing Sherrill was a marvelous experience. As my mind reflects over all those years, I can honestly say that Sherrill Nielsen was incredibly talented, always a pure joy to work with -- a true professional; a legendary singer and performer. But, after all those years together; after all the roads we walked together; all the ups and downs we shared, that which I cherish most is the memory of his unwavering loyalty and friendship. I know from experience that professionally none will ever compare to Sherrill Nielsen, he was simply the best of the best. Sherrill was dedicated to and supportive of his loved ones and friends, of which I'm proud to say I was one. He passed away on Friday, December 10, 2010 at 11:06 a.m. in Cullman, AL,. His funeral -- a Southern Gospel Celebration of Life -- was held on December 16th in Cullman. He is buried in Tyler, Texas next to his beloved daughter, SherRee'."
