Abstract: From its origin in an attempt to describe the physics of hadrons, through its position as our best candidate theory of quantum gravity, to its role as a source of examples and ideas for those studying quantum physics, we'll discuss the story of string theory. We'll take a look at various puzzles and obstacles that have confronted researchers, and how efforts to understand the theory have opened new directions to explore, while leaving many interesting puzzles that still need to be solved.
