Anonymous: Siciliana (end of 16th century) This beautiful and nostalgic Siciliana belongs to the “Ancient dances and airs”, a piano suite composed in 1917, consisting of pieces from the eponymous orchestral suites - which Ottorino Respighi himself transcribed. Some interesting facts: 🔸 The three orchestral suites are, in turn, free transcriptions of arias and dances from the 16th-17th centuries: "fakes” in the context of that trend in Italian music of the early twentieth century aimed at rediscovering the ancient - a way of finding new impulses for the instrumental music after the glorious era of Italian melodrama. 🔸 The genius of Respighi deliver to us some very elegant, refined pieces that show his masterful use of orchestral colors (he studied orchestration in Russia with Rimskij-Korsakov) and his knowledge and love for the ancient music (he was also a musicologist). 🔸 You could have heard this piece (in its orchestral version) in the movie “The tree of life” of Terrence Malick (2011).
