When AI-generated code fails in production, who's responsible? Grady Booch's answer is blunt: the architect. No exceptions. Do you agree? Drop your take in the comments. Shweta Vohra hosts the Next Generation Architecture Playbook, InfoQ's series on how senior architects are rethinking design, platforms, and delivery in the age of AI. In this inaugural episode, she sits down with Grady Booch -- co-creator of UML and one of the most influential figures in the history of software architecture -- to explore what AI tools actually change about the architect's role, and what they cannot touch. Grady spent his final six years at IBM split between AI research and studying neuroscience to understand what human cognition does that machines cannot. He just retired at the end of last year and is now writing a documentary about computing and civilization -- and two new books. He brings that rare combination of long historical perspective and hands-on daily use of AI tools to every answer in this conversation. In this episode, Grady draws a clean line between architecture and design -- architecture is the set of decisions expensive to change, and no AI tool touches that -- and explains why LLMs are, in his words, "architectural dead ends" for reasoning. He breaks down where the real productivity gains are coming from, where de-skilling is quietly happening to junior engineers, and why abductive reasoning remains the boundary current AI cannot cross. He also responds directly to claims that AI will soon write all software, explains why the compiler analogy is more accurate and more limiting than most people realise, and argues that architects who hide behind the tool when things go wrong are making a fundamental professional mistake.
