The Christmas lights are already in place at London’s most famous retail crossroads; the junction of Oxford and Regent Street. Other shopping areas from Bond Street to Carnaby Street are prepping too; the lights will start to go on in mid-November. Londoners show every sign of wanting to start the celebrations early. Selfridges has seen online searches that are 225 per cent ahead of forecast. Advent calendars are leading the search; not simple childhood ones but luxury adult versions. This year, Selfridges will have more than 50 on offer, ranging from its trademark beauty calendar, with offerings from Pat McGrath and Sunday Riley, to others with a daily cactus or mince pies, (which, despite the name do not contain any meat but are a traditional Christmas recipe of dried fruit, syrup and spices encased in pastry). Links between commerce and charity are particularly marked this year. Carnaby Street, behind Liberty, will have lights in partnership with the Choose Love charity for Afghan refugees. Selfridges also has the innovative Toy Project, part of its Project Earth RESELLFRIDGES resale platform. Starting from October 18, customers will be able to shop pre-loved Christmas gifts for the family, as well as help the charity by donating outgrown toys, with profits used to find workshops, toy and book libraries. After being closed last year, London hotels will be playing up a Dickensian sense of largesse. From November 10, The Corinthia, nicely near London’s festive epicentre of Trafalgar Square and under the leadership of Thomas Koch, brings a German-accented take on the holiday season angelic-themed paper decorations plus flowers and foliage from McQueens. The hotel’s al fresco restaurant will be transformed into an alpine garden with tartiflette and kaiserschmarn, pancakes with plums. On the Strand at the Savoy, the decorations will be up from mid-November with a forest of trees. In the hands of designer Tom Marklew, the Lanesborough will be decked in thousands of crystals and silver orbs from November 12, the same day its afternoon tea under the direction of Peggy Porschen, includes honey roast pumpkin and brie sandwiches and a Christmas pavlova with cranberries. The Royal Opera House’s staging of The Nutcracker is a long-standing tradition. This year, the run starts on November 23, finishing on January 8. It’s directed by Peter Wright, with junior roles being performed by children at the Royal Ballet School. There’s a new alternative this year as well. Cinderella, with a new score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and a revisionist book from Emerald Fennell, is at the Gillian Lynne Theatre after a delayed opening thanks to the pandemic. Family concerts are an important part of a London Christmas. At St Martins-in-the-Fields, Paddington Bear will be getting an introduction to the world of classical music on various dates from December 4.
