This historical film from the 1950s presents a moving overview of patient experiences and physical rehabilitation services offered at the New York State Reconstruction Home (now named Helen Hayes Hospital) in West Haverstraw, NY. The video is narrated by Helen Hayes MacArthur, the beloved star of film and screen, who was a staunch supporter and advocate for the hospital, and who served on the hospital's board of visitors from 1944 until her death in 1993. Helen Hayes Hospital celebrated its 125th anniversary of exceptional service in 2025. Established by an Act of New York State Governor Theodore Roosevelt on April 11, 1900, the hospital opened its doors to its first four pediatric patients on December 5, 1900 in a cottage on Tarrytown’s Augell estate. Known then as the New York State Hospital for the Care of Crippled and Deformed Children, it was one of the nation’s earliest institutions—and is believed to be the first state-owned hospital—dedicated to caring for children with physical disabilities. The hospital’s mission was rooted in compassion, expertise, and the belief that every child deserved the opportunity to heal and thrive. Growing demand, driven in part by the prevalence of tuberculosis of the bone and joint, prompted the hospital’s relocation in April 1905 to its current home in West Haverstraw. The hospital continued to expand its expertise and services through the decades. Polio became a major source of admissions during the epidemics of the 1920s and beyond. In 1945, during World War II, age restrictions were lifted and the hospital admitted its first adult patients. In 1944, actress and humanitarian Helen Hayes MacArthur joined the hospital’s Board of Visitors, and in 1974, the hospital was renamed in her honor in recognition of her decades of advocacy and philanthropic support. Today, Helen Hayes Hospital has evolved into a nationally recognized leader in physical rehabilitation, serving patients of all ages recovering from debilitating injuries and illnesses, including stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, cardiac conditions, orthopedic injuries, and complex surgeries. The hospital has earned numerous distinctions, including 5-star CMS ratings, U.S. News & World Report “Best Nursing Home - Short-Term Rehab” designation, and Castle Connolly Top Doctor recognition. The hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission, affiliated with the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System, and a member of the Montefiore Einstein SNF Collaborative.
