https://www.arlingtonortho.com/condit... The shoulder consists of three bones that form a ball and socket joint: the arm bone (humerus), the shoulder blade (scapula), and the collarbone (clavicle). A network of four muscles known as The Rotator Cuff comes together as tendons to form a covering around the head of the humerus. This attaches the arm to the shoulder socket, and helps to lift and rotate the arm. Athletes in sports that involve throwing, along with people who do repetitive lifting or overhead activities, have a greater risk of tearing or fraying their rotator cuff, especially over the age of 40. Patients with a torn rotator cuff usually report feeling: Pain at night, particularly if lying on the affected shoulder Pain when lifting and lowering the arm Weakness when lifting or rotating the arm A crackling sensation when moving the shoulder Tears that happen suddenly, such as from a fall, usually cause intense pain, followed by a snapping sensation and immediate weakness in the upper arm. In Tears that occur gradually, from overuse, the pain may start as mild irritation that only occurs when lifting the arm over your head, such as reaching into a cupboard, and may continue to worsen over time making routine activities more difficult. Depending on the severity of the tear, some patients can recover simply by resting the arm and taking over the counter pain medication until the tendons heal. However, more severe tendon tears may require Arthroscopic Surgery to fully repair. If you experience pain and muscle weakness in your shoulder, talk to an orthopedic specialist today.
