A Short Film for SOCY1004, 2018 by Isabelle Vu and Alyssa Nykiel Abstract submitted on Turnitin My Mind: A Perpetual Conversation (A Day in the Life of Anxiety) An Original Poem by Isabelle Vu inspired by Charles Cooley’s Sociological Concepts Wake… a conscious choice I have to make Sleep... a suggestion I do not have any power over The mind is not a hermit’s cell but a place of hospitality and intercourse then why … can’t I drown these internal conversations in my head When I am faced with … Faced with myself and those around me The invoking of these feelings, constantly evolving, feeding, seething Make me shape shift and become the person I need to be In this very instant ‘I think, therefore I am.’ But that’s the thing, all I ever do is think My failures, what I say, will they like me, what I look like Do I fit in, obsessing, picking apart, as I look at myself These simple ideas called suggestions Formed by some sort of selection Each have a shifting, multifarious bit of life As I gaze into the mirror and hear the constant conversations in my head I cannot help but imagine can they see through me instead? Who do they think I am? What is my appearance to them? Will they discover the real me? Am I the person I portray myself to be? Myself and society go together, as phases of a common goal A group makes up its mind in the same manner I must make up mine I must search my stream of consciousness for pertinent ideas Or surely this naive expression will incorporate my fears Like the music of an orchestra, I arise not from my individuality But rather Through the communication of others, i learn my place within this social order That my behaviour is teachable and that my nature is hereditary I stare blankly as I am consumed by what’s seen as a taboo mental disorder Constant need for efficacy Constant need for validation My interactions from personal relations Driving my self conceptions My own self evaluation Is always in that of relation But why are my thoughts like this Not really knowing who i am My mind continuously racing Persisting, obsessing And even at the end of the day Sleep and rest pull further away And even as I lie awake Unable to drown these conversations These anxieties that make me quake As they make me question who i am I am what I think others think what I am
