Entering studio 2 at EMI on the 17th of October 1963, 4 track recording was at their disposal. A new Struder J-37 four track machine which had just been installed at EMI. This 3 hour session also saw the recordings of their fifth single ‘I want to hold your hand’ which essentially saw them break into America and then the first christmas record of speech and an aborted attempt at a remake of ‘You really got a hold on me’. Lastly attention turned to ‘This boy’ which lasted approximately the last hour of the session, 9 to 10pm. George’s strumming pattern is virtually impossible to replicate to 100% because of the little changes he does, it’s only when you listen to it really closely that you can hear them. During the bridge take note in the change of strumming pattern, they both follow the same. *Minor note - John plays F# George plays F#7 by lifting his pinky finger. Also the different voicing’s John plays on the E and A chords. Playing them differently helps in giving a fuller sound. For the overdub during the outro I was always under the assumption that George just played it the way he did live. However when listening closely to isolated tracks he plays the last phase with a slide and I believe it’s also on the J160e. @G@GearThereEverywhereave a great podcast where they discuss the issue regarding the slide etc. Paul @gui@guitargearconnectiontions he thinks it maybe double tracked or both octaves on the slide as it sounds really thin just playing it on one guitar. I had a play around with this and played both octaves and I really think it thickens up the sound and is closer to what’s on the record rather than just the one guitar. In fact I’m convinced this is how it was done. Plus there were two overdubs added to the basic track.
