On November 11, representatives from government institutions and civil society working in the field of protected areas gathered at the American University of Armenia for a workshop titled “Protected and Conserved Areas for the Success of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Agenda Success in Armenia.” The event focused on strengthening the capacities of national stakeholders on protected and conserved areas, management effectiveness, and their role in meeting the targets of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Arsen Gasparyan, biodiversity expert at the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment, and Hakob Matevosyan, leading expert at the Ministry of Environment. Speakers underscored the relevance of the workshop as Armenia advances its work on the Draft Law on Making Amendments to the Law on Specially Protected Nature Areas. Jindřich Chlapek from the Nature Conservancy Agency of the Czech Republic introduced international perspectives on biodiversity priorities and presented the concept of IUCN Category V Protected Landscapes. Participants practiced identifying potential PL areas, explored adaptive management approaches, and developed indicators to monitor management effectiveness. This workshop took place within the Road to COP17 Initiative in cooperation with the Nature Conservancy Agency of the Czech Republic. The initiative is a year-long series of activities aimed at increasing national awareness and strengthening capacities ahead of the seventeenth Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity that will be held in Yerevan in October 2026. The Road to COP17 is a joint effort of the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment, the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia, and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
