André Bertel Shihan's 2025 NEW ZEALAND Budo Karate Seminar was held of February 15th and 16th. BACKGROUND: André Bertel Shihan (7th Dan) is the Technical Director of the 国際空手道松濤館 (International Karate Shotokan) based in beautiful Oita City, Kyushu, JAPAN. From 1993 he became a personal student of the late master Asai Tetsuhiko Shuseki-Shihan (10th Dan) in Japan. He was many times New Zealand National Champion in both Kata and Kumite. He retired from competition after winning the Men's Individual Kata at the 34th Kumamoto Prefecture Karatedo Championship. The only non-Japanese karateka to ever place in the 'top eight', let alone win this event. An 'A Class' Japan/International Instructor, Examiner and Judge, he is a professional full-time karate teacher in constant demand regularly conducting seminars in Japan and all around the world. A special note for 2026....... André Shihan introduced ASAI KARATE in Feburary 1996 in Christchurch, establishing the JKA (Matsuno/Asai) Canterbury Branch; therefore, next year will mark the 30th Year! A VERY SPECIAL SEMINAR WILL BE CONDUCTED TO COMMEMORATE THIS!!! 2025 NEW ZEALAND SEMINAR OVERVIEW: Hosted by Peter Burtenshaw Sensei's IKS Christchurch Dojo the event was focused on 'the base practices of old-school Shotokan' and the bujutsu advancements made by Asai Tetsuhiko Shuseki-Shihan, It was an exclusive event with a maximum of 50 trainees. By request the Koten-Gata 'Seiryu' was taught with higher level details being unveiled pertaining to both technical excellence and, ultimately, practical self-defense applications. Different forms of Kumite were worked on with particular focus on MAAI not to score points, but to finish the opponent. Ultimately, in true karate, SUN-DOME is where the blows arrested just before impact; however, they must not only reach the target but be arrested at the point where -- if not stopped -- will go through. This means that without Sun-Dome, the maai is for a full contact blow. In this way, kumite training is not reduced to a mere game but, rather, is essential practice for JISSEN-KUMITE. The kihon covered throughout this seminar was basic, supporting the application of both the kata and kumite practiced. Again, we'd like to thank all of the karateka who attended this Seminar. It was not only awesome Budo Karate, but wonderful camaraderie with any politics. A big "OSS" to you all!
