An important artifact of student free speech is coming to the First Amendment Museum. But we need your help to conserve it. "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" is a banner made by Alaskan high school student Joseph Frederick to test the limits of student free speech. After being suspended by his principal, Deborah Morse, Frederick filed a civil rights lawsuit, claiming his free speech rights had been violated. The case, Frederick v. Morse, made it to the US Supreme Court in 2006. While Frederick's lawyer argued that that banner was about free speech and not drugs, the US Supreme Court sided with the school, stating that schools can prohibit speech that can be regarded as encouraging drug use. To this day, Frederick v. Morse is one of only a handful of cases that have defined the limits of students' free speech. After 20 years of wear and tear, the banner is in a considerably fragile state. We need the funds to help professionally conserve it before it can be exhibited at the First Amendment Museum. Can you please help us ensure that this iconic piece of First Amendment history continues to educate generations to come about students' free speech rights? Our costs include: Shipping: $200 Interpretation: $500 Conservation: $800 Care & Upkeep: $1,000 Thank you for helping us! https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/cam...
