It’s always nice to scroll past some wholesome content on your socials - think clips of cute cats, cooking videos, positive affirmations or ASMR. So…how about ‘internet parents’? Click here to subscribe to our channel 👉🏽 https://bbc.in/3VyyriM In China, POV videos of parents doing everyday things - like telling you to wrap up when it’s cold outside or reminding you not to skip meals - are racking up millions of views. Fans leave lots of comments sending love to their digital mums and dads, but lots of the most popular accounts weren’t originally set up for this purpose. So why are they so popular? The BBC’s Eunice Yang, who’s based in Hong Kong, joins us to explain what’s behind the trend - and what it could have to do with China’s former one-child policy. Assistant professor Ting Guo from the University of Toronto unpacks this too. Plus, we hear from a fan of these internet parent videos, who tell us what the content means to them. 00:00 Intro – the rise of digital parents in China 01:18 What are “internet parents” 01:27 Who makes these videos? 03:00 How widespread are these videos? 03:30 The power of the comment section 05:05 I watch digital parent videos 06:04 Why Gen Z seeks out this content 06:56 Ddiscipline over affection in some Chinese households 08:01 The one‑child policy’s impact 08:42 Being the only child 10:23 Real parents learning from digital ones Watch more episodes from What in the World here 👉🏽 • What in the World in the studio Instagram: @bbcwhatintheworld Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk WhatsApp: +44 330 12 33 22 6 Presenter: Iqra Farooq Producers: Mora Morrison and Chelsea Coates Video Journalist: Baldeep Chahal Editor: Verity Wilde ---------------- This is the official BBC World Service YouTube channel.
