What is IoT?

Have you heard of "Internet of Things"? 你有沒有聽過"物聯網"，或者"Internet of Things"? "Internet of Things" (or "IoT" for short), simply stated, is to connect devices with respective independent functions together over the Internet. Internet of Things，或者叫 IoT，簡單來說就是利用互聯網，將獨立功能的裝置互相連接起來， This allows data belonging to these devices be shared, analyzed and processed. 從而令到他們所擁有的數據可以共同分享，然後作出分析和處理。 As a result more accurate decisions can be made and overall efficiency can be improved. 結果就是令到成個系統能夠作出更精準的決定，亦可以令效率提升。 Take autonomous vehicles, for example. The vehicle consists of multiple systems:A set of sensors for Road/Object detection, the self driving system, anti-theft system, etc. 例如用無人駕駛汽車作例子，它由不同系統所組成， 如偵測路面情況的感應器，自動導航系統，防盜系統等等。 The vehicle works as a whole because these components are able to communicate with each other and share data in real time. 整個汽車的運作，都依賴這些裝置互相的溝通和即時的數據分享。 The data collected from the vehicles can also be uploaded to the cloud, and be shared with auto insurance companies for data collection during a car accident. They can also be analyzed to help improve the technology for autonomous vehicles. 而收集到的數據，都可以上載到雲端，做不同的用途，例如把意外發生時的數據交給保險公司分析。又或者將行車數據收集後，也可以為無人駕駛這技術作出改善。 IoT is used in a variety of applications such as smart factories and smart homes.
