(2 Aug 2000) Voice and effects XFA VOICED BY: Philippa Meagher The people of Kuwait are commemorating the tenth anniversary of Saddam Hussein's invasion of their country. Officials are highlighting the plight of six hundred and five Kuwaiti prisoners of war whose whereabouts are unknown. In Iraq, people also looked back to the events which took place a decade ago. Millions of Iraqis are suffering depravation as a result of United Nations sanctions introduced after the war. But the Iraqi government insists that the victory in the Gulf War belongs to the country's leader, Saddam Hussein. VOICE-OVER: 00:02 Kuwait City 10 years on since Iraqi troops invaded. There were no official ceremonies to mark the anniversary. But the physical scars from the war do remain. 00:12 This burnt out car has been turned into a war memorial. And this tank recalls the 12 Kuwaiti resistance fighters who died ambushing an Iraqi patrol. 00:23 A monument recalls the six hundred and five P-O-Ws who never returned from the war. 00:29 Their relatives have never given up hope. 00:31 This woman says she is still praying for her son to come home. 00:38 It took Iraq just a few hours to invade its small oil-rich neighbour in August 1990. It was another six months before the country was liberated. By then, Iraqi troops had set fire to many of Kuwait's oil fields in a breathtaking act of wanton destruction. 00:54 Iraq remembers the war differently to Kuwait. 00:57 The alliance which forced Iraq out never managed to oust Saddam, and 10 years on, he remains firmly in charge. 01:02 United Nations sanctions designed to force him out have crippled the country's economy. And whilst they may still be loyal to their leader, ordinary Iraqis are suffering incredible hardship. 01:10 UPSOUND 01:14 The country is desperately short of food and essential supplies like medicine. But Iraq still refuses to give into United Nations demands to allow more weapons inspectors into the country. And the U-N says it won't end the blockade unless Saddam backs down. 01:32 VISION ENDS Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
