Johann Sebastian Bach: Suite No. 6 in D major, BWV 1012 Oliver Herbert, cello Performed on Friday, March 30, 2018 Field Concert Hall, Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia 0:00 Prélude 4:39 Allemande 13:03 Courante 16:25 Sarabande 22:22 Gavotte 26:40 Gigue The six suites for unaccompanied cello by Johann Sebastian Bach not only represent the cornerstone of the cello repertoire; they are among the most recognizable and profound instrumental works in all of Western music. Ever since the great Catalan cellist Pablo Casals resurrected the suites from relative obscurity in the early part of the 20th century, they have arguably been studied and performed more than any set of pieces by any composer. The cello suites are significant in that they imply three- or four-part polyphonic music through a single line. This blending of simplicity and complexity set a new standard for what was conceivable in terms of both structural and emotional depth for a single instrument. Unlike the preceding five suites, the sixth suite in D major was not conceived on a four-string cello, and many choose to follow Bach’s original instruction to perform the piece on a five-stringed cello, as it is presented here. This eases the extreme technical challenges put forth by the composer and allows the performer to play with a greater sense of freedom befitting the inspirational and triumphant nature of the suite.
