Announcing!! GROUND SHIFT STUDIO, the next evolution of Chalk Riot!

BIG NEWS!! We’re officially launching Ground Shift Studio. This studio builds on more than thirteen years of work as Chalk Riot. What began as a grassroots, DIY way to create shared moments through pavement art gradually evolved as our projects moved into transportation and civic spaces. Over time, the work grew in scale and complexity, and the focus naturally expanded to include heat, safety, and how streets function in everyday life. Working directly on pavement regularly educates us about how sidewalks and streets shape nearly every part of a city, often in ways we overlook, and Ground Shift Studio grew out of those lessons. We’ve spent over a decade using chalk to advocate for tons of worthy causes, but the fact is: transportation is the leading cause of pollution in our country, which also amplifies the ill effects of urban heat. In the DMV region, we are facing a harrowing heated future -- SOON. We want to be at the forefront of getting artists involved with this meaningful and crucial work. Chalk Riot isn’t going anywhere!! It will continue as a community-centered practice rooted in chalk-based art and participation, special events, photo ops and more. Ground Shift Studio becomes the home for our larger civic, transportation, and climate-responsive work, especially projects addressing urban heat and active mobility infrastructure, so each practice can move forward with clarity and purpose. Ground Shift Studio focuses on the ground and the urban systems around it. Our work includes pavement cooling experiments, artistic pedestrian safety interventions, funky shade structures, and more! More than ever, the ground beneath our feet matters!
