What if Varys Broke Ned Stark out of Prison? Let’s explore the depths of it in the video. Ned: Even now you torment me with riddles. Varys: Only because you ask the wrong questions, my lord. You ask if I will free you, but where shall you go? The North can never take you back, no matter how much they wish. Not if it would mean making an enemy of the realm. There will be no making peace with Joffrey. Ned: He is not fit for the Iron Throne, Stannis is the rightful king. Varys: On the first part, we agree on. But Stannis will not be able to rule. Robert won his throne through his charm, his hammer, and his strength. Stannis has none of those things. He squats atop Dragonstone with a handful of lesser lords. His brother, meanwhile, is gathering an army large enough to conquer the realm but would rather see it starve as he plays king. Tell me, which one of those men is deserving of your loyalty? Ned: It is not about loyalty, it is about right, and honor. Varys: Right? Honor? Was it right or honorable for Robert to cave the chest in of Prince Rhaegar and then chase his family across the Narrow Sea? Babes who were born admist this war? No. It was never about right or honor, it is always might. If you truly wish to do what is just, there is one path and one path alone. Ned: Tell me of this path. Varys: Daenerys Stormborn. She lives across the Narrow Sea but intends to come here, one way or the other. But she will need advisors. Your family has done her a great wrong in the past. Whatever justice Robert’s Rebellion might have had is lost after the king pardoned the likes of the Mountain and Tywin Lannister. To allow their spawn to rule will be a betrayal of everything you fought for. Ned: Daenerys, the exiled princess. She is married to a warlord and rides alongside a horde of warriors. Varys: Has. They have since abandoned her, but reports say the girl still works for her return. Better she returns with good advisors. One who might be convinced to help your family. Ned looks up at the eunuch for a long moment, unsure how to react. But he understands the deal simply enough. To agree to these terms is to walk away a free man. To have a chance to save his children. He takes his hand and rises to his feet. Ned and Varys walk out of the cell without another word, without resistance. Before Ned realizes it, he is travelling eastward on a ship to Essos. They land on Pentos, where Ned sees a familiar face, Ser Barristan Selmy. The old knight is surprised to see Ned there, but once Illyrio Morpantis explains their plans for Daenerys and the two agree to work together. Unfortunately, Daenerys is in a far worse position than they realized. After the death of Khal Drogo, his army has splintered, leaving her with only a handful of followers, and the queen wanders off into the Red Wastes. For a moment, the group worries that she may fall victim to the heat of the desert. However, reports soon circulate that she has appeared in Qarth. But even more remarkable is that she is now accompanied by a trio of baby dragons. The news sends them hurrying to the great trader city to join forces with her as she tries to gain allies. Before Ned leaves, though, he pens a letter to his family, assuring him that he is ok and that the Lannisters no longer have him under their control. It is a shocking development, and Varys ensures it reaches Robb. The hooded warlock who released the Manticore turns to flee, but before she can disappear into the shadows, a second figure rushes forward—broad-shouldered, swift with a longsword in hand. The sorcerer barely makes it three steps before the stranger catches her. A strong hand seizes the warlock’s shoulder, yanking him backward. The stranger’s sword plunges into his gut, swift and brutal. The warlock gasps, convulses, and crumples to the ground. But as he falls, Ned dumps a torch over his body, which begins to smolder. As he returns to their group, Jorah’s breath catches. His hand flies to the hilt of his sword. Jorah: By the gods…That’s—” Daenerys: Ned Stark. The man who killed her father. Daenerys: Kill him. Rakharo and Aggo don’t hesitate. Blades whisper from their scabbards, surrounding the stranger in an instant. He meets Daenerys’ furious gaze with solemn grey eyes, like a coming storm. Barristan: You would kill the man who just saved your life? Surely whatever wrongs you believe this man has done, saving your life would warrant him a stay of execution. Daenerys: Very well, I will let him beg. Ned does not reach for his sword. He does not beg. Ned: I am no Lannister. My father fought beside your father in wars, I only rebelled because of what was done to my family. Surly you cannot begrudge me of that. Daenerys: He killed my father. Barristan: That was Tywin Lannister, as were the murder of Rhaegar’s children. Ned decried it as the act of cruelty and barbarity it was. #gameofthrones #nedstark #gameofthroneswhatif
