Thousands of refugees are sleeping rough among the rocks on Mount Sinjar in northern Iraq after fleeing their homes with just the clothes on their backs. Many have died from exhaustion and dehydration. The Yazidis' ordeal began on Sunday Aug 4, when the Islamic State descended on Sinjar and the surrounding towns and villages. Residents described 24 hours of mayhem as the jihadists trawled through the streets. Some local men tried to fight back, with what few weapons and little ammunition they could find. Jonathan Krohn was the first Western journalist to reach Mount Sinjar. He describes the scenes he found on the mountaintop, where temperatures exceed 37C.
