NUH occupational therapist shares post-de Quervain tendon release surgery care advice, e.g. rehabilitation exercises, pain and swelling reduction tips and activity modifications to prevent occurrence of same condition in the other hand, etc. After you have your bulky dressing removed, you should start doing light exercises, as tolerated to minimise internal scarring: Wrist movements Thumb movements To reduce the pain and swelling of the affected hand: Take the pain relief medication as prescribed by your doctor Elevate your hand above your heart level when walking or sitting Avoid lifting objects heavier than 500 grams Avoid activities which require repeated arm/hand movement (e.g. chopping food, typing, etc.) When your wound is fully healed, massage your scar to soften it. Do so with some moisturiser and increase pressure on the scar as the pain reduces. To prevent de Quervain tenosynovitis, adopt activity modification in your daily activities to avoid awkward thumb positioning or forceful gripping pinching.
