“Winter camping in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and hiking to the Eben Ice Caves with my dog.” Ahsoka and I headed up to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for a winter overnighter with one goal in mind — hiking out to the Eben Ice Caves the next morning. The night dropped to nine degrees, the diesel heater had its opinions, and winter camping reminded me it’s not always glamorous. But by morning, with hot chocolate in hand and a warm dog by the heater vent, we were ready to see what the ice had built along the rock face. The trail in was slick, the caves were busy, and I even managed to lose my phone somewhere along the way — but sometimes the small setbacks are part of the experience. Cold night. Slippery trail.
