This is an overview of a horticultural project which uses organic methods to produce high quality herbs and vegetables made available to the local community through shops and restaurants. The Glasshouses (Na Tithe Gloine) at Killult (Cill Ulta) are situated between Falcarragh and Gortahork, in the heart of the Gaeltacht (a Gaelic-speaking region) on the north-west coast of Donegal, in the north west of Ireland. A community based company; the Centre for Natural Resources (Lárionad Acmhainní Nádúrtha Teoranta ~ LAN Teo.) runs the project which includes a one acre Glasshouse, several large polytunnels and an extensive area of arable land. The site, which is owned by Údarás na Gaeltacha, was originally home to 8 acres of glasshouses which were developed in the late 1960s. For year round production the glasshouses were heated by oil, but by the mid 1970s the rising price of oil made the operation increasingly expensive. The business could not compete with the growing volume of cheaper imports. Operations ceased in 1976. Some of the glasshouses were dismantled, while those that remained fell into disrepair and were badly damaged in the face of the heavy north Atlantic storms. Shattered glass lay everywhere, the area became overgrown with weeds and briars and lay derelict for a number of years. By the mid 1980s efforts were underway to revive the glasshouses and the 1990s were to see a major restoration. With the support of national and Gaeltacht development and funding bodies, the site was reclaimed and an acre of glass house restored through the work of local volunteers and community groups. In 2004 LAN Teo. was established to manage the centre. It is run with the assistance of The Community Services Programme (CSP) administered by POBAL on behalf of the government. The development of the centre is also aided by the Rural Social Scheme administered by the Department of Social Protection. Presented by Annmarie Ní Dhubhchóin this video features interviews with Eoghan Ó Gallachóir, Sean Ó Duibhir and Colm Ó Gallachóir of the Glasshouses in Killult. It also includes reports from two of the local businesses supplied by the project with contributions from the manager; Tomás Mac Fhlaitheartaigh, and customers of McClaffertys' supermarket in Gortahork and Brian O'Donnell, the owner and head chef of Danny Minnie's restaurant in Annagry. This is an excerpt from "Bia sa Tuath Nua" (Food in the New Country) the fourth programme of the series Luach ár Linne (The Value of Our Time) produced by Independent Pictures for TG4, the Irish language television channel.
