Maningrida Australia has Highest Rates of RHD in the World - Take Heart http://takeheart.tv We always felt that Maningrida had one of the highest rates of rheumatic heart disease in the Top End of Australia, but perhaps in the entire world. The rates of rheumatic heart disease in Maningrida were extraordinary high. We're looking at 5%, 6%, or even 7% of all children having this devastating preventable disease. We were expecting to find some cases that we didn't know about, but what was really surprising is we found three kids with severe rheumatic heart disease that we didn't know about, and two of those children ended up needing open-heart surgery. So whole reason we went to do this project to pick up on kids with rheumatic heart disease early, so they wouldn't need to have heart surgery. But what we found is that they already had such severe rheumatic heart disease that they still ended up needing to go down to Melbourne. So that was quite tragic.
