Governed by the Rome Statute, the ICC is the world’s first permanent international criminal court. While the Court has indicted several world leaders such as Omar al Bashir and Colonel Gaddafi, it is criticised for turning blind eye to perpetrators in other regions and for being a political instrument of the West. The Court has faced serious legitimacy issues for closing the investigation into alleged NATO war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan and for not investigating the treatment of the Uygher Muslims in China. Recently, several nations have referred the acts of Russian leaders over the invasion of Ukraine to the ICC. As conflict proliferates across the globe the ICC is more relevant than ever, but does it have the strength to do its job? Or has it lost its purpose? Speakers: Kenneth Roth (Human Rights Watch Director) Salih Hudayar (Prime Minister of East Turkistan Gove) Hamid Sabi (Counsel at Uyghur Tribunal) ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
