The Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP), in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), hosted two sessions of an interactive webinar on 10 February 2026 to introduce partners to Simple Future Narratives as a practical, efficient approach to designing projects that are resilient to uncertainty and changing conditions. With more than 130 participants, the session brought together technical experts, project designers, and implementing organizations to explore how incorporating multiple plausible futures can strengthen project rationale, reduce the risk of maladaptation, and ultimately enhance the delivery of long lasting global environmental benefits. GEF projects operate in dynamic systems shaped by climate change, economic trends, governance shifts, demographic changes, and social behavior. Yet, project design often relies on assumptions about a single, linear future. The webinar highlighted how Simple Future Narratives help teams to: • Anticipate uncertainties across multiple interconnected drivers • Expand the range of intervention options considered • Identify responses that are robust across many possible futures • Strengthen the project’s theory of change and baseline scenario • Reduce the likelihood of maladaptation
