Before Masunaga, Fukui was a farming region plagued by long winters and limited opportunity. In 1905, former schoolteacher Gozaemon Masunaga saw a way forward. As printed literature spread across Japan, so did the need for eyeglasses. Rather than chasing mass production, he founded Masunaga Optical with a singular goal: create sustainable livelihoods through master craftsmanship. Gozaemon recruited master craftsmen from Tokyo and Osaka and paired them with local students in small teams—apprenticing by day, learning reading, writing, and arithmetic by night. Over generations, this system transformed Fukui into the epicenter of Japanese eyewear. Today, 97% of all eyewear made in Japan comes from this region, driven by the principle of Monozukuri (ものづくり)—the relentless pursuit of perfection through craft. Still family-owned and led by Satoru Masunaga (the founder’s great-grandson), Masunaga produces every frame entirely in-house using a proprietary 200-step process that takes nearly nine months to complete. The polishing alone spans several months, combining tumbling with bamboo chips and pumice, followed by extensive hand polishing—resulting in frames that retain their luster and integrity for decades. The Masunaga One Hundred, released in 2023, is a modern tribute to the legendary Masunaga 000, a frame so influential it was placed in a time capsule at the 1970 Osaka World Expo. Both frames share a bold 6mm acetate front, a base-5 curve, and 150mm temples, but the One Hundred expands the design—offering a wider frame front, taller lenses, and a slightly narrower bridge that sits a touch lower on the nose. Masunaga’s acetate frames incorporate Japanese beta-titanium core wires, lighter and stronger than steel, often engraved with intricate detailing unseen by the wearer—an expression of craftsmanship over showmanship. The hinges are a standout feature: 7-barrel, double-riveted titanium hinges engineered for longevity, designed to hold position mid-close and resist wear over decades. This particular pair is finished in Color 25 (Navy Blue / Demi Amber)—a deep navy upper that melts into warm tortoise below, with translucent temples revealing the core wire beneath. For lenses, I chose Progressive Trivex IOT lenses with a double-gradient tint (40% Bali Sunset fading to 25% Watermelon), paired with XTRActive Brown Transitions. The result is a lens that enhances contrast, deepens warmth, and subtly intensifies under sunlight—bringing out the richness of both the frame and the world beyond it. The kanji 光輝 (Kōki)—meaning radiant brilliance—captures the spirit of the One Hundred perfectly: a frame that doesn’t shout for attention, but rewards those who notice. This is my second pair of Masunaga One Hundreds—and very likely not my last. 📦 The unboxing video for these frames is available at the following link: • Unboxing Masunaga One Hundred in Navy/Demi... 📦 A longer and more in-depth video on this topic can be found at the following link: • Masunaga One Hundred Color 25 (Navy Blue/D... 📦 A related video can be found at the following link: • Let's Play a Game: Where was this eyewear ...
