Alphasat, the fourth satellite to join Inmarsat's I-4 fleet.
Inmarsat CEO Rupert Pearce described the launch as "incredibly spectacular". "This is a tremendous testament to the innovation, creativity and talent of so many in the European space industry," he said. "I would also like to thank all the engineers and other operational and support staff at Inmarsat. Without their hard work and dedication, Alphasat would have remained a concept." The Ariane 5 ECA rocket blasted off at 19:54 UTC on Thursday night (25 July), with launch provider Arianespace confirming a successful spacecraft separation 27 minutes 45 seconds later. Alphasat will provide mobile phone and internet across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
