Incredible footage of a violent "megawedge" tornado over El Reno, OK captured by meteorologist-storm chasers Juston Drake and Simon Brewer on May 31, 2013. Most of the footage was shot on Interstate 40 in the inflow notch/region of a massive supercell thunderstorm. The final scenes of the video are shot looking southwest at the tornado when it had reached it's maximum width of approximately 2.6 miles. The last scene Juston and Simon are driving east away from the approaching tornado as powerful inflow winds roar over their location. A mobile radar research team measured EF5 winds near 300 mph very near to the surface. The National Weather Service and University of Oklahoma researchers determined the maximum width of the El Reno tornado to be a record 2.6 miles wide using mobile Doppler radar data and ground damage surveys. The previous record maximum tornado damage path width was 2.5 miles wide with the Hallam, Nebraska megawedge tornado on May 22, 2004. Unfortunately, several people were killed by this tornado including 4 storm chasers. Luckily, this tornado passed mostly over rural ranch and farmland south and east of the more densely populated neighborhoods of El Reno.
