(24 Mar 2020) Like many people around the world, sisters Fatima and Noor-us-Sahar are struggling to adjust to life under lockdown in Karachi, Pakistan. But 22-year-old Fatima is trying to make the most of this unexpected home confinement. The University of Karachi student is spending more time with her family and helping her mother with household chores. She is also using the time at home to run an online campaign with friends to spread awareness of the new coronavirus. Fatima's elder sister, Noor-us-Sahar, 27, is having a tough time adjusting to remote working. The human rights professional says her work involves giving presentations and explaining policies to people, face-to-face. The lockdown is "causing a lot of difficulties but we are working through it," says Noor-us-Sahar. But the situation is unlikely to ease soon, as the number of cases in Pakistan rises. And the country is gearing for economic losses because of the global pandemic. Pakistan's prime minister said last week he fears the new coronavirus will devastate the economies of developing nations, and warned richer economies to prepare to write off the debts of the world's poorer countries. Imran Khan said that if a serious outbreak happens in Pakistan, he's worried that his government's efforts to lift the ailing economy out of near-collapse would begin an unstoppable slide backwards. As of Monday, Pakistan confirmed more than 800 cases of the new coronavirus and six deaths. Most patients who contract the new coronavirus develop only mild symptoms and recover after about two weeks. But the virus is highly contagious and can be spread by those with no visible symptoms. For older adults and people with underlying health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
