Winter 2025–2026 brought unusually cold and snowy conditions to the New York region. In early February 2026, significant ice formation was reported along the Hudson River near New York City. Prolonged freezing temperatures created large ice floes, disrupted ferry navigation, and transformed parts of the river into a dramatic winter landscape between February 8 and February 12. Although the Hudson River rarely freezes completely because it is a tidal estuary—constantly mixing fresh water with ocean tides—it has frozen solid in the past. The last time the entire river froze over was during the historic winter of 1821, when people were even able to walk across portions of the river.
