Noam sheriff: PARTITA for viola and violoncello Yariv Aloni, Viola Pamela Highbaugh Aloni, Cello Live at home, July 24, 2020 The Partita has five very short movements: Prelude (which does starts just like the Bach G major cello suite!) Sarabande (01:47’) Allemande (03:31’) Menuetto (04:38’) Gigue (06:19’) Noam Sheriff (1935-2018) was one of Israel’s great composers and conductors. When I was sixteen I had the great luck and privilege to be accepted to study privately with him the arts of orchestration, composition and even a bit of conducting. I first knew about Noam Sheriff as a young teenager when I would attend concerts of the Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra, today the Israel Netanya Kibbutz Orchestra, of which he was the music director. Several of my early teachers were players there as well. I would arrive at his home every Wednesday morning and for several hours we would go over scores, listen to recordings (especially by Sibelius, which he adored) discuss conducting matters, and I would try to absorb every possible bit of information I could get from his vast knowledge and wisdom. I was so excited to learn that Noam had written this little miniature suite, Partita, written “in olden style” for viola and cello. I love the music, it is so witty, charming and moving and it gives me a chance to play with my wonderful wife and musical partner.
