After a quite period on my channel a new episode of another british wel known diesel. As promissed earlyer, today we run the notorious 3,5 AMCO "fingerbiter" The Amco company made only 4 engines. The 0,87 diesel in 2 versions, and the 3,5 in plain and bal bearing. The Amco had a good reputitation build up with the first 0.87 diesel engines.Thats why it survive the first months of the 3,5 failures. The crankshafts were too thin, and together with a soft alloy conrod the most exampels never get old. The mistakes are corrected by AMCO,and after the weak parts has changed, the engine was very popular in control line flying and as freeflight powerplants, mostly in the UK. My two engines has the ser.numbers 8450 and 8483 !!,so there are produced short after each other.Engines from numbers 5000 and up are known as the better once. The intake passage boore in the shaft is smaler, what left over a thicker diameter and the rod is made from better materials. It has a smaler rpm output, but it wil hold now on ...and run for many houers,if not abused. I have 2 exampels, one is a poor runner,as the wristpin and rod is worn out.The other is almost new,but misses the piston, rod and wristpin. I made those parts new,but made the wristpin a bit thicker.3,6mm to 4,0mm.The uncomon wristpin construction is like the wristpin boore is not drilled compleet throu the piston.Only one opening, what makles a pressed in pin hard to replace without demagin the piston...,if the conrod must be changed.I guess there are only 2 ways. Drill another hole on the exact other side, and punch the pin out, with use of a spring collect special made for it with boores,so the piston wil be not misformed... Or,..drill the pin aut a bit,so thread can be tapped inside, and than srew a bolt in it,where you can try to pull it out.(Also with special kind of collet with one hole at the pin location,to prevent misforming the delicate piston) On my engines the heavy pistons are reduced in weight together with a drilled out pin.Further I ad the crankweb contraweights, what makes the engine run very smooth now and also I make a ventury insert,to generate moore vacum,as the suction in the carb was on the low side. Its 7 mm and is now 4,5mm what works very wel..A radical shortstroke engine with a heavy piston& no counter weight at the shaft is not a good ideaa in my opinion.Amco shoud make at least some effords,to change this points in the design. But I guess money is like always the reason behind this. I like to use the Amco in the Ambird sportsman C/L plane. The exelent power to weight ratio and long shaft make it a ideal powerplant for that project. I change the wing design(thicker airfoil and build up wing instead the 2 peace prefabricated heavy wing),ad flaps and build the bird far lighter than it was intent to construct. The nice exhaust wil make it for sure a nice special vintage racer. After maiden flight is done, there wil be a clip of this nice, funny and rare racer! It remind me a bit of the Geebee,so the paintjob wil be basic white, with red front and stripes.I wil also make wheel pants,to make it look even better. Thanks for drop in and moore diesels and rebuilds on my channel;. And much moore engines still to come. Keep your fingers clear and happy flying!
