Legendary Band LOST 48 Million Fans With This 1 CONTROVERSIAL Album! | Professor of Rock

Today, we're diving into one of the most turbulent, passionate, and creatively explosive sagas in rock history. This British-American supergroup, Fleetwood Mac, turned their personal disasters into platinum records. But somehow, through all the substance abuse and betrayal, they channeled their misery into one of the most epic rock careers ever. For this episode, we’ve got the story of two songs that were written by ex-lovers to be sonic weapons: Go Your Own Way and Dreams, each calling out the other in front of millions until the end of time. And the crazy thing is, they had to perform these songs together night after night, smiling for the cameras while secretly seething. Then there’s the story of the deeply personal song Sara that clocked in at 15 minutes with 16 verses. It told the entire story of the band, but there was no way it was ever getting onto the album or the radio. So the songwriter Stevie Nicks kept chopping down until it barely resembled what it was supposed to be. And yet, it is still an all-time classic. Let’s get into it. It’s the Evolution of Fleetwood Mac told through their greatest songs and stories that have never been told till today… Let’s do it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers Frank Kuna, zachery perry, Shayne Smith, Tom Stokes, Walter O. Let’s get right into this…It’s time for another episode of our series “Evolution.” On this show, we tell the story of a band’s career through their most defining track across their 5 major albums and a side and B-side from each record. These may not be a band’s most popular songs, and they may not even be my personal favorites. But each song will take you from the beginning to the end of a band’s journey and showcase the evolution of their sound and artistic direction. Let’s get into it. Formed in London, England in 1967, the original line-up of Fleetwood Mac consisted of guitarist Peter Green, drummer Mick Fleetwood, and guitarist Jeremy Spencer… with bassist John McVie joining shortly after to complete the rhythm section that would eventually give the band its name. Guitarist Danny Irwin was also added in 1968. But things really started to shake up when Peter Green left in 1970, followed by Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan. To fill the void, the band recruited keyboardist Christine McVie—who had already been a guest contributor and was married to John McVie. The group spent years in a state of flux, experimenting with different styles and even relocating to California to escape legal battles and dwindling UK success. The final piece fell into place on New Year's Eve in 1974. Mick Fleetwood, seeking a new producer at Sound City Studios, heard the track "Frozen Love" by the duo Buckingham Nicks. Impressed by Lindsey Buckingham’s guitar-work, Fleetwood invited Lindsey to join, but he insisted that he and his musical partner/girlfriend Stevie Nicks were a package deal. Mick agreed on the spot, and within weeks, the five-piece unit entered the studio to record their 1975 self-titled album, instantly forging the chemistry that would define their global superstardom. Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 self-titled album, often called the White Album, was released on July 11th. The album steadily climbed the charts for over a year before reaching #1 on the Billboard 200. It would go on to certify 7x platinum and spawn 3 Top 20 hits in the US: Over My Head, Rhiannon, and Say You Love Me. The White Album became the blueprint that redefined Fleetwood Mac as a global pop powerhouse and introduced the world to the iconic trio of songwriters that would define the band's golden era. For A-side pick, I’m going with Stevie Nicks’s Rhiannon. In 1974, Stevie picked up a book that would lead to her breakout hit. It was called "Triad: A Novel of the Supernatural" by Mary Bartlet Leader. Published in 1972, the novel tells a haunting story about a woman named Branwen who loses her child and then gets possessed by a witch named Rhiannon. Stevie was absolutely captivated by that name: Rhiannon. And she told herself that if she ever had a daughter, she'd name her Rhiannon.
